Christoph was gaining quite a following at the Palace Theatre and drawing a growing audience at Jackson’s Music Hall. Both venues now used the epithet ‘Rittersmann the Romantic’ to advertise him among their main attractions each week, a sobriquet that he found acutely embarrassing. This image of him was so far off the mark that it entered the realm of the absurd, but then the stage was a game and he had no choice but to play along. Just because his brilliantine-sleeked hair glistened in the lights, his face possessed a certain satisfying harmony of shape and his eyes sometimes betrayed the misty sadness of a man far removed from his homeland, it did not mean that he subscribed to feelings of empty sentimentality. His appearance was just that – a trick of the light, a gift of his birth.

He meant every word of the songs that he sang; even the songs that were lighter and that seemed more frivolous held within them truths about life, about humanity, that spoke to him. Then there were the serious songs, his classical repertoire: the Ueder, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, that meant far more to him than any of the others. Their melancholy, their beauty, the way they captured the depth of human emotion touched his heart in ways that he simply could not describe.
